# Task templates

Define a standard set of subtasks once, so everyone follows the same steps for recurring work.

Many organisations follow a fixed sequence when they implement a legislative change or carry out an impact analysis. A task template captures that sequence as a main task with subtasks. When a colleague creates a task and picks the template, the subtasks are added automatically, so everyone works the same way.

A common example is a template *Implementing a legislative change* with the subtasks *Impact analysis*, *Gap analysis* and *Gap closure*.

## The overview

Under **Settings**, **Task templates** lists your templates under **Created task templates**. Each row shows the template's tags, its number of subtasks and how often it has been used (**Total used**). Click the arrow next to a template to show its subtasks.

## Creating a template

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Create the main task

Under **Settings**, open **Task templates** and click **+ Task template**. Give the template a name, add a description or note if useful, and optionally a tag you can filter and search on later. **Save**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Open the template

The template appears in the overview with its tags and number of subtasks. Click its name.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Add subtasks

Click **+ Add subtask**. The form shows which main task the subtask belongs to. Give the subtask a title, a note if needed and optionally a tag, then **Save**. Repeat for each step in your process.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Editing or deleting a template

Click the template name to open it, then use **Edit** to change it or **Delete** to remove it.

## Using a template

When creating a task, select the template in the **Task template** field. See [Creating a task](/tasks/creating-a-task.md). The overview shows how often each template has been used.
