# Navigating Ruler

The menu, the search function, and the action buttons you will meet on almost every page.

## The menu

The menu on the left follows the order of the compliance cycle. Hover over a menu item to see its sub-pages; for example, **Legal Framework** opens **Themes and topics**, **Radar** and **Consultations**. From top to bottom:

| Menu item | What it is for |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Inbox** | Alerts about relevant changes in the Legal Framework, Radar, Consultations and other sources |
| **Legal Framework** | Themes and topics that apply to your institution, the Radar with upcoming legislation, and Consultations you can respond to |
| **Control measures** | The library of your organisation's policies, procedures and controls |
| **Risks** | The risk heatmap and your risk assessments |
| **Tasks** | All tasks assigned to people and departments in your organisation |
| **Monitoring** | The monitoring agenda and monitoring reports |
| **Control** | Task control and Inbox control for administrators (optional module) |
| **Signalling** | Incoming news for other laws, such as HR or tax (optional module) |

At the bottom of the menu you find three more items:

* **Sources**: everything Ruler monitors, split into Laws and regulations and News and case law. Sources are not filtered for your type of institution.
* **Switch**: only visible if you have access to more than one customer account.
* **Settings**: language, the administrator settings, Help, Log out and the version number.

Clicking the version number shows a short explanation of the latest update. Scroll down to see earlier versions.

## Search

The **magnifying glass** at the top right is Ruler's general search. It searches across everything in Ruler: laws, topics, themes, news items, case law and more.

<figure><img src="https://3147355061-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F6EN6kULBhEjCcyc8iw1L%2Fuploads%2FTB9fvDZIXMZJToaE2Wk6%2Fnav-top-right-controls.png?alt=media&amp;token=afd7b98e-bf10-499a-8bd4-663702ba242a" alt=""><figcaption><p>Create task, search, and the Department and Profiles switchers</p></figcaption></figure>

## Creating a task from anywhere

The **plus** button at the top right creates a generic task, one that is not linked to a specific item in Ruler. Tasks linked to an item, such as an alert or a topic, are created from that item's page. See [Creating a task](/tasks/creating-a-task.md).

## Department and profile switchers

On most pages you see two dropdowns at the top right: **Department** and **Profiles**.

* If your organisation has more than one department in Ruler and you have access to several, use **Department** to switch. You see the content relevant to that department, and you can only select one department at a time.
* If your organisation has more than one profile, use **Profiles** to switch profiles on or off. Content specific to a switched-off profile is hidden.

If your organisation has only one department and one profile, these dropdowns do nothing.

## Action buttons

The same set of action buttons appears on many pages. What they do:

| Button | Action |

Each button is explained in more detail on the page of the feature it belongs to.
