# Scoring impact and archiving

How to process an alert so that your assessment and follow-up are recorded.

Processing an alert in Ruler is three decisions: how much does this affect us, does anything need to happen, and are we done with it. Each decision has a button.

## Score the impact

Use the **Impact** button on the alert to record what the change means for your organisation. You can choose:

* No impact
* Low impact
* Moderate impact
* High impact

The impact score appears in the Inbox list, can be used as a filter, and feeds the Inbox impact widget on the dashboard.

## Create a follow-up task

If the alert is relevant, use **Create task** on the alert. The task is automatically linked to the alert, so anyone looking at the task later can see where it came from, and anyone looking at the alert can see what was done about it. See [Creating a task](/tasks/creating-a-task.md).

{% hint style="success" %}
**Ruler in practice**

Create a task for every alert that is relevant to your organisation. Typical follow-up tasks are conducting an analysis of the change, creating or updating a risk assessment, or reviewing the policies and procedures the change touches.
{% endhint %}

## Archive the alert

When an alert has been handled, archive it with the **Archive** button. Ruler always asks you to add a note explaining why you are archiving. This is deliberate: the note becomes part of your audit trail, so you can later show what was received, what you decided and why.

Archived alerts disappear from the default Inbox view. Use the **Status** filter to see them again.

Administrators, and users with the right to archive Inbox items, can archive several alerts at once by ticking them in the Inbox list.
