# Radar

The Radar shows what regulation is coming, so you can prepare before it enters into force.

The Radar shows new and upcoming legislation, and changes to existing legislation, that may apply to your institution. Where the Inbox tells you what has changed, the Radar tells you what is going to change, and when.

## Reading the Radar

The top of the page is a chart. Each sphere is a radar item, positioned by the year it is expected to enter into force. Two things about a sphere carry meaning:

* **Colour**: the darker the sphere, the further the legislation is in its process. Light spheres are proposals; the darkest spheres are legislation already in force. Corresponds to the radar item's stage.
* **Size**: the larger the sphere, the higher its impact level. If your organisation hasn’t set an impact level for the radar item, Ruler uses the expected impact level set by Ruler’s editors.

Hover over a sphere to see which radar item it is, when it is expected and what stage it is in.

Below the chart, the same radar items are listed as cards, grouped by expected year. Each card shows the expected date and when it was last changed.

## Filtering

Use **Filter** to narrow the Radar by:

* **Expected in**: the period of entry into force, for example 2026-2030
* **Radar items**: whether you are following them or not
* **Stage**: draft European legislation, final European legislation, draft (implementation) national legislation, final national legislation, or legislation in force
* **Filter on label**: radar items with a certain label

## Following and unfollowing

By default your department follows every radar item that applies to it, and receives alerts when an item changes. If an item is not relevant to your department, click the **eye** on its card, or **Unfollow** on its detail page. Ruler then stops notifying you about that item. You can follow it again later.

## The radar item page

Click a radar item to open it. The page shows:

* **Expected on**, **last changed** and **stage**, so you know how firm the date is
* A **summary** by the editors, usually covering the introduction, scope, content, and status and follow-up of the initiative
* A tasks block with the number of linked tasks and the first deadline
* **Topics**: the topics in your Legal Framework that the radar item affects. The editors add these links as the item takes shape
* **Alerts**: the Inbox alerts sent about this item
* **Documents**: everything linked to the item, grouped by period, type, level and issuer

The document list can be long. It includes documents from earlier stages of the legislative process, such as proposals, explanatory memoranda, opinions, consultation files and amendments, so you can understand why the legislature decided what it did. For an item that is still early in the process, the list may be short because little has been published yet.

From the detail page you can **Unfollow** the item, **Create task**, or use **Info** to see the profiles and departments it applies to.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Ruler in practice**

If a radar item is relevant to your institution, create a task to follow it up so your organisation is prepared in time. Typical tasks are an impact analysis or a gap analysis against the expected requirements.
